“Good job. Great read, Hayden.”

Hayden laughed, closing the book.

Hayden had settled in beside Cassy on her bed. He stretched out his legs as best as possible. He’d already finished ‘Twas the Night before Christmas and was now sitting and talking with her. He knew Alex had been pissed that he’d just shown up on their doorstep, but he didn’t really care. He wanted to make sure the paternity test would be sent out tomorrow. Enough stalling. He needed to move forward, and he also needed to get back to work. He also needed to get his attraction to Alex under control. The woman could wear a bag and look hot. Even her reindeer pajama pants, wet hair, no makeup, and disgruntled expression were the hottest thing he’d seen this year. Next to the red tank top thingy she wore with spaghetti straps and cleavage…and he also knew that she felt as hot as she looked because of the hug she’d given him. She’d completely disarmed him. He hadn’t expected that…compassion. And he hadn’t expected the jolt of desire.

“I never had a dad before.”

Hayden turned to her. Hell. He didn’t know what to say, but he did know that he was a man unaccustomed to tears or emotion. Things didn’t really phase him, but she did. Her little hand in his did.

She looked up at him, those blue eyes locking onto his so he didn’t dare look away, not that he would. “Janie has a dad now. Matt. He’s not her real dad, but he’s good enough.”

“Yeah, Matt’s a cool guy.”

Cassy nodded. “Sometimes people don’t have to be pathological to be family.”

He tried his damndest not to laugh out loud, but hell. “I think you mean biological.”

She nodded again, like it was just a minor detail. “Like, Janie and Beth aren’t my real sisters, but my Mom said that blood doesn’t have feelings and feelings make family.”

He cleared his throat, thinking of Alex, and all the ways she had impressed him. Every single time she annoyed him, she still managed to impress him. And then he thought of that night in the bakery when he’d lost it and she’d yelled at him, telling him bluntly that she was the first person to love Cassy. “Your mom’s a smart lady.”

She nodded again. “That’s probably why I’m so smart.”

He grinned. Hell, whenever Cassy said something like that, he knew it didn’t take a paternity test to prove she was his; this kind of arrogance was in the genes. “That makes sense.”

“She works so hard, Hayden.”

He knew that. He thought of the day at the bakery with the oaf from the bank. He felt her desperation, her panic, and it bothered the hell out of him that someone like her needed to struggle at all. “I know she does.”

“She sold our car to some family.”

He closed his eyes for a second. The loan. She was putting money toward that bakery.

“Oh, don’t feel bad. We can use Auntie Cara’s car. My mom already told me.”

He cleared his throat.
